Self-exclusion

If you think that you are spending too much time or money on gambling, whether online or in gambling premises, then you can ask to be self-excluded.

What is self-exclusion?

Self-exclusion is when you ask a gambling company to stop you from gambling with them for a certain length of time. It's used when you think that you have a problem with gambling and want help to stop.

In addition to self-exclusion, you could consider software which blocks your access to gambling websites, such as GamBan. You should also seek support, and there are many organisations that can help you.

Self-exclusion can be useful when you have made the decision to stop gambling. It is also important that those suffering gambling related harm seek help and support on the GamCare website (opens in new tab).

Self-exclusion lasts for a minimum of six months.

GAMSTOP

GAMSTOP is an online multi-operator self-exclusion scheme and has been available since April 2018. All gambling businesses must participate in this scheme.

Once you have made a self-exclusion agreement

All gambling businesses that offer gambling in licensed premises such as arcades, bingo halls and casinos must be part of a multi-operator self-exclusion scheme.

This scheme allows you to make a single request to self exclude from all premises offering the same type of gambling, such as betting shops. This means you won't need to exclude from each operator individually.

Once you have made a self-exclusion agreement, the gambling company must close your account and return any money in your account to you. It must also remove your name and details from any databases it uses.

It is your responsibility to stick to your self-exclusion agreement. If you try to gamble during that time, the gambling business should take reasonable steps to prevent you from doing so in the future.

Breaking your self-exclusion agreement

In an anonymous gambling environment there will be occasions where customers who have self-excluded will be able to gamble without being identified. It is the responsibility of gambling business to put procedures in place to prevent this from happening.

If you have gambled whilst self-excluded you should let the gambling business know as it helps them to identify any areas where their procedures could be improved.

You may also wish to let the Commission know as it provides us with useful information about company procedures and if they are working.

If you do want to contact us with this type of information, you will need to give us permission to share your details with the company. You will also need to tell us:

  • When you entered into the self-exclusion agreement.
  • How you let company know that you wanted to self-exclude.
  • How the company confirmed that the self-exclusion was in place.
  • The time period you were self-excluded for.
  • The dates you were able to gamble despite having a self-exclusion date agreement in place.
  • Details of any contact you have had with the company since you gambled with them.

This information will be used to consider if any regulatory action is needed.
