Commission briefs London boroughs on gambling issues

Council officers from London boroughs were given the latest updates on the regulation of gambling at a partnership meeting last week.

Run by the Gambling Commission’s Local Authority Liaison Unit (LALU) and held at Westminster City Council, more than 40 delegates from local authorities and police forces were informed about developments in various legislative areas which affect their role in co-regulating gambling.

The Gambling Commission provided updates relevant to local authorities on Gambling Act codes of practice, poker in pubs/clubs and gaming machine training, as well as an overview of lotteries, prize competitions and free draws.

A number of other organisations also contributed to the training. The Better Regulation Delivery Office gave an update on Primary Authority and gambling competency modules, the Local Government Association (LGA) talked about their Rewiring Licensing Initiative and LGA’s engagement with betting shops and the Met police spoke about seizing illegally sited gaming machines.

The Gambling Commission’s Rob Burkitt, who co-presented the event, said:

“This was a great opportunity for the Commission to pass on its expertise to local police and council officers on the latest developments they need to be aware of in regulating gambling.

"LALU works with local councils as they have responsibilities for the compliance and enforcement of the Gambling Act locally.”
